When the brigade saw some of Anthony’s troops, they fired. The confusion spread through the entire American army. At this point, Washington had no choice but to retreat. 5 War on the Frontier A nthony Wayne retired from the army in 1783. He wanted to stay in Georgia and manage the rice plantation granted to him by the Georgia legislature, but he didn’t have enough money to operate the farm. So Anthony eventually sold it and returned to Pennsylvania. Anthony was elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly the following year. He worked to help his state recover from the war. In 1787, Anthony went to the Constitutional Convention, where he voted to ratify the new Constitution of the United States.
The morning after the Paoli Massacre, the British marched along the south side of the Schuylkill River. W hile the British led by General Grey were brutally attacking the Americans at Paoli, a special detachment was sent to Waynesborough. The soldiers surrounded the Wayne home.
